Today, our kids are learning many new methods of long division, like division by multiples of 10. New Methods for Long Division: Multiples of 10
The Division by Multiples of 10 method in effect, allows you to divide without using division. To divide using this method, you multiply the divisor (the number on the outside of the multiplication bracket) by multiples of 10. Then you use this product to break up the dividend into smaller parts.
Confused? Your kids probably are too! We’re going to walk you through a few examples step by step so you both can comprehend this new method.

Example 1. 423 ÷ 3
Set up the problem in a division bracket just like you normally would but place a horizontal line to the right of the bracket.
If you’re child finds this method helpful they can also experiment with reducing the number of step by first multiplying by a larger multiple of 10 and then subtracting the larger product. Let’s redo example 1 with fewer steps to illustrate this method:
This example (above) is just like example 1 except we subtracted a multiple of 40 instead of subtracting multiple of 10 4 times.
